I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Andrea Pares of local Denver Folk band, Avenhart, to discuss their new, self-titled EP and to get to know a little bit more about the band.
We opened the conversation mostly talking about front woman Andrea Pares' background at U
Hayden, Phil, then Olivia, Alex, Alice.
Fall2014 they decided to test out some of andreas material she had already been working on.
Collab with Recording students.
Holiday house party as first show. great show, solidified music quest.
changed names but wanted something grounded in who they are as a group but with forward thinking. toyed with some "hipster partchment [paper store] names" in her words. ended up with avenhart at the end of the day, original word, hard and soft contrasts.
theyve since developed their sound, and now all work together on writing music.
When i asked her about how she described their sound/genre, she said "It's hard i think, because some people think were bluegrass, a lot of people assume that and we really aren't bluegrass.
We have [the same] Bluegrass instrumentation, but if you were to throw us in front of bluegrass players, they'd be like 'why are you here?' because bluegrass is a kind of virtuosic genre. So when you throw a bluegrass band infront of bluegrass people, they assume you're gonna sit there and just like shred for 10 minutes. Not saying that we can't do that but that's not the direction we go in. We kinda pull from bluegrass in the simple 3part harmonies.
Everything started about four years ago in a Bluegrass ensemble at The University of Colorado Denver. It was funny to hear Andrea describing the dark and dank depths of the old Tivoli Brewery before it's major renovations.
